The Great Australian Parenting Survey 2019 http://noblewords.com.au/the-great-australian-parenting-survey-2019/ Sun, 03 Mar 2019 06:15:26 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=975 To mark the first birthday of ‘the Netflix of parenting advice’, ParentTV, in March 2019, the School Mum blog surveyed more than 740 Australian parents about their hopes and fears, the highs and lows, and the stuff they wish they’d known before taking the plunge!

The results are revealing, often surprising and, at times, incredibly touching. Some top-level findings are explained in this infographic but you can view our press release summarising the full survey results here or the original survey data here.

ParentTV CEO and founder Sam Jockel – creator of the wildly popular Facebook communities ALDI Mum and School Mum – is available for interview and commission from Brisbane in March. Some of her incredibly talented experts, including Dr Justin Coulson, Dr Kristy Goodwin and many more will be available too.

Email emma@noblewords.com.au to line up your interview.

Happy first birthday, ParentTV – and happy parenting, Australia!

Barabaig: Life, Love and Death on Tanzania’s Hanang Plains http://noblewords.com.au/barabaig-life-love-and-death-on-tanzanias-hanang-plains/ Mon, 18 Sep 2017 04:59:45 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=934 Dr Charles Lane’s breathtaking book, Barabaig: Life, Love and Death on Tanzania’s Hanang Plains, recounts the years he spent living with this deeply misunderstood and much maligned people. Not only is Dr Lane’s work on the Barabaig the most comprehensive ever written, he also took the stunning photography that appears in its pages. This was showcased brilliantly in this extract in The Weekend Australian Magazine last Saturday, where you can find out more about this intriguing community and its rapidly disappearing way of life in the story.

Alternatively, here’s a wonderful review in Daily Review.

The book will be launched at Brightspace Gallery in Melbourne’s St Kilda on 19 September, with photographs on show for a month.

“A warm tale of love, friendship and loyalty.” http://noblewords.com.au/a-warm-tale-of-love-friendship-and-loyalty/ Tue, 12 Sep 2017 06:20:49 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=925 Here’s a lovely review of Jean Flynn’s debut novel, Lovesick, this week in Victoria’s excellent The Weekly Times.

A highlight for me: “What’s so entertaining about this lighthearted romantic read is the author’s ability to create such depth of character in the main stars. They are totally believable and likeable”.

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

Thanks to The Border-Mail‘s Sue Wallace for the review.

Some Girls – a book for all girls http://noblewords.com.au/some-girls-a-book-for-all-girls/ Tue, 29 Aug 2017 00:31:24 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=919 Comedian extraordinaire, mum and soon-to-be-author Nelly Thomas launched her Pozible campaign yesterday to help fund publication of her new book Some Girls. She’s a quarter of the way to hitting her target in under 24 hours – great news!

She wrote Some Girls because she has two very different little girls: one is into pink and Barbie dolls, the other loves Power Rangers, short hair and dressing up as Darth Vader. Guess which one gets bullied?

Some Girls shows that all girls – of every colour, race and religion, able-bodied and not, tall, short and everything in between – are brilliant just the way they are. A book for boys will follow in 2018.

The ever-amazing P!nk said it perfectly to her six-year-old daughter in her VMAs acceptance speech this week: “We don’t change.. we help other people change so that they can see more kinds of beauty.” Quite right.

Calling all lovers… http://noblewords.com.au/calling-all-lovers/ Thu, 24 Aug 2017 04:57:12 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=916 …Of romance writing!

The second annual XO Romance Prize opens for entries on 31 August.

The prize is open to unpublished manuscripts by Australian writers aged 18 years and over. The winner will be chosen by acclaimed fiction editor Alexandra Nahlous and receives $5000 AUD and a publishing contract with XO Romance, a division of independent Australian publisher Xoum.

“We believe in publishing Aussie voices and telling Aussie stories — and romance is a vital and vibrant part of this,” said Xoum Publishing Director Rod Morrison. “After the success of last year’s prize, we can’t wait to read this year’s submissions.”

The XO Romance Prize gives Australian romance writers an opportunity to have their novel published by an independent publisher whose innovation and skill have seen them grow exponentially in the past five years.

Entries close at 5pm on 31 October 2017 and the winner will be announced in January 2018.

Ballarat-based debut author Jean Flynn won the inaugural prize and her novel Lovesick was published this month, garnering strong media interest and sales.

“Winning the inaugural XO Romance Prize not only gave my writing validation, it also meant getting the opportunity to work with a fantastic publisher and see Lovesick come to life,” Jean said. “It’s hard to believe that my manuscript is now an actual book, sitting on actual shelves, in actual bookshops. I’m so glad I entered.”

So get scribbling, romance-fanciers.

Putting illness anxiety under the microscope http://noblewords.com.au/putting-illness-anxiety-under-the-microscope/ Wed, 23 Aug 2017 03:32:47 +0000 http://noblewords.com.au/?p=910 Like all authors, Jean Flynn puts heart and soul into her writing … but, for Jean, that’s not where it ends. Jean’s prize-winning novel Lovesick follows main character Beth’s search for love whilst managing her illness anxiety (sometimes called hypochondria), and it’s a condition that Jean is all too familiar with.

In this interview with Seven’s The Daily Edition, Jean shares the reality of living with this disorder.

Meanwhile, Lovesick continues to garner media attention for its funny and frank author. In Good Weekend magazine, Jean shared her love of love lettersin Huffington Post, her somewhat chequered bed linen history and her passion for Aldi; and in The Sydney Morning Herald, her anger at irrational hostility.

Stay tuned for more from this talented writer.
