More baby myths busted… Burping? Who needs it?

Dr Pamela Douglas continues her crusade to help parents become the experts on their own baby this week. The promotional tour for her new book, The Discontented Little Baby Book (University of Queensland Press), moved to the couch of Nine’s TODAY Show for a chat with Karl and Lisa about some of the common contradictory advice parents are given about a baby’s sensitive first few months, including that of burping your child after every feed. Dr Douglas say, if it’s working for you and your baby, fine; but burping interrupts the natural sleepiness that babies feel at the end of a feed and could interfere with the body’s biological sleep regulators. It’s just one of the many obstacles we put in the way of a baby’s hardwired ability to sleep.

Fascinating stuff. For more tips on getting a better night’s sleep – and really enjoying your baby, even in those fussy first few months – you can download a free sample here or watch Pamela in action here.
